György Pálfi’s ‘Hen’ Trailer | What If Humans Are the Side Characters? (2025)

Imagine a world where humans are not the main characters, but mere side players in a grand narrative. This intriguing concept is explored in György Pálfi's upcoming film, 'Hen', which is set to premiere at the prestigious San Sebastian Film Festival.

'Hen' is a thought-provoking tale that challenges our traditional understanding of storytelling. Pálfi, a renowned Hungarian director and writer, has crafted a unique cinematic experience that delves into the lives of animals and their interconnectedness with human existence.

The film follows the journey of a hen, an escapee from a chicken farm, who finds solace in the courtyard of a dilapidated restaurant. Here, she embarks on a heartwarming quest for motherhood, navigating the complexities of love, hierarchy, and protection. Her story mirrors the silent struggles and messy compromises of human lives, offering a fresh perspective on our own existence.

Pálfi describes 'Hen' as a multi-layered narrative, akin to a hologram, presenting the same picture from different angles and dimensions. The film intertwines the lives of a hen and a man, showcasing how their fates are interconnected despite their different goals and motivations.

"The smallness and peace of the hen's existence meets a human tragedy amidst a global problem," Pálfi explains.

But here's where it gets controversial: Pálfi dares to ask, "What if we humans are the 'side thread' in the story?" He made the bold decision to work with real animals, opting against CGI or AI, resulting in an organic and authentic portrayal of chickens on screen.

'Hen' is produced by Pallas Film and View Master Films and is set to make its European premiere on Wednesday in the Zabaltegi Tabakalera section of the festival. International sales are handled by Lucky Number.

The San Sebastian International Film Festival, taking place from September 19th to 27th, promises an exciting lineup of premieres, including James Vanderbilt's 'Nuremburg', Edward Berger's 'Ballad of a Small Player', and Alice Winocour's 'Couture' starring Angelina Jolie. Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence will also be honored with the Donostia Award later this week.

So, are you ready to explore a world where humans are not the center of attention? 'Hen' invites us to reconsider our place in the grand scheme of things. What do you think? Is this a refreshing take on storytelling, or does it challenge our sense of self-importance? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
