Fakenham Locals Demand Action: Reckless Driving Threatens Historic Norwich Street (2025)

A call to action has been issued by the residents of Fakenham, demanding urgent safety measures on Norwich Street. This historic cobbled street, once a bustling hub for market traders and their horse-drawn carriages, has now become a dangerous battleground between reckless motorists and vulnerable pedestrians.

Shopkeepers along Norwich Street are raising the alarm, reporting incidents of careless driving that have resulted in crashes into historic shopfronts, blocked ambulances, and even injuries to elderly pedestrians. One business owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, warns that the situation is dire, stating, "There's going to be somebody dying if we don't take action soon."

This trader's father was recently hit while leaving his shop, and a 150-year-old cornice was damaged by a delivery van mounting the pavement. "Drivers have no respect," he laments. "They speed through without a care for others on the road."

Venetia Strangwayes-Booth, owner of Venetia's Yarn Shop, shares her concern, saying, "I'm amazed no one's been seriously hurt." She describes watching pedestrians walk into oncoming traffic, assuming the cobbled street is pedestrian-only. "They just walk, unaware of the danger," she adds.

The absence of double-yellow or white lines, a result of a town center resurfacing project in 2000, has created a hazardous situation. Prioritizing the town's appearance over safety has led to this current crisis.

But here's where it gets controversial: Fakenham's mayor, Angela Glynn, confirms that discussions are underway to implement a sustainable solution. She proposes installing yellow lines to protect the cobbles and deter reckless driving. "The lack of visible deterrents exacerbates the problem," she explains.

And this is the part most people miss: Fakenham has ample free parking near Norwich Street. Using these spaces would alleviate the parking issues and create a safer environment for all.

So, what do you think? Is this a step in the right direction, or are there other solutions that could be explored? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
