Bathroom Vanity Lighting Inspiration and Shiplap | DIY Playbook (2024)

Have you ever made a small tweak in a spaceonly to realize that you LOVED this change so much that you want to keep the progress train moving…. full speed ahead?! <— Honestly, I think that’s why Matt gets so nervous/hesitant about most of my ideas because he knows that each project will snowball into about 10 more projects?! hahaOOPS!

The world of DIY can be a slippery slope sometimes and this is exactly where I find myself when it comes to our current bathroom situation. I swapped out my builder grade mirror for a chic round mirror a few weeks ago and I am in l-o-v-e with the new look. To be perfectly honest, I’m a bit embarrassed that it took me 3+ years to do this!!

But now that I swapped out the mirror, I have a new excitement for this space and want to change all. the. things. But like I mentioned a few weeks back, changing out the tile and vanity isn’t really an option. Both were new when we moved in and I don’t think it would be a smart investment to tear out a bathroom because it’s not my style. So instead, I’m trying to alter the not-so permanent design elements in the bathroom to make it as much “me” as I can without spending a ton of money. The first on this new list of projects? The bathroom vanity lighting!

My current vanity light isn’tBAD (not at all), it just isn’t exactlymy style. And I’m hoping just like the mirror did, a simple swap will make a big difference in making the room more “me”.

After searching the internet for more hours than I care to admit, I realized that finding a stylish vanity light is A LOT harder than it sounds. Mostly ALL of the vanity lights that I saw on the market are very basic/builder-grade and not very stylish. So I thought I would take this opportunity to make a little “round-up” of a few of the stylish vanity lightsI ran across during my in-depth research.

I really LOVEthe gold options but don’t really think gold will work in our specific space… mostly because we have all silver hardware+ the silver-ish mirror. HOWEVER, I’m definitely bookmarking this post for the bathroom I hope to design from scratch…someday (a girl can dream, right?!).

In the meantime, I think I’m going with vanity light option #6. It’s sleek, it’s simple, and it’s one of the most affordable options at around $70. Vanity lights #4 & #5 were solidrunner-ups, but were both more money than I wanted to spend on this project.

Bathroom Vanity Lighting Inspiration and Shiplap | DIY Playbook (3)Here’s where that slope starts getting reallyslippery….

After I decided to change the light fixture, I found out that I would need to repaint the entire room because the wall behind the fixture will need to be painted once it’s swapped out. When I realized I needed to repaint the room, I figured I should probably make any other “minor” changes during that samewindow of opportunity.

Bathroom Vanity Lighting Inspiration and Shiplap | DIY Playbook (4)The first to go?! The decor decisions I made above the toilet when we moved in 3+ years ago (the ones that aren’t really my style anymore). I want the space to be a lot lighter, less dark brown, and overall more “me”, which means the dark ampersand, the builder grade light fixture, the yellowish outlets — it’sall gottago before we start painting!

Shiplap Inspiration

And while I brainstormed how I could lighten this space and make it a tad more “me”, I stumbled upon the idea of adding shiplap to the bathroom. Originally I wanted to shiplap the entire room, but I ran into a few roadblocks. But instead of ditching the idea all together, I decided to (DIY)shiplap half-way up all of the bathroom walls. Here’s some of my inspirationpics:

I know the inspiration photos don’t show just shiplap, but all of the images allowed me to visualize a wall with white on the bottom half and paint color on the top half. I LOVE, love, love the navy paint above the shiplap, however, I don’t think that navy will work in my space (thanks to those yellow-beige counters, the mocha vanity, and those beige bathroom tiles… ugh).

Bathroom Paint Color…Help!

I’m excited that the white shiplap will brighten the space but to be honest, I’m a bit “stuck” on the exact paint color. I’ve gotten some AWESOME suggestions via Instagramand I’m in the process of researching and weighing my options. I also recently found thisinspiration photo, which has a lot of the color similarities from my bathroom and has me thinking maybe darker gray above the shiplap could be the way to go?!

What do you guys think?! I love that the darkish gray will really pop next to the white shiplap but I don’t want this grayto clash with the vanity and make it look even more yellow-beige. I’m totally torn and will take any and all the tips/suggestions/advice I can get!

In the meantime,I am READY to dive into my first DIY shiplap project. I’ve used painter’s tape to get a “rough draft” look of what this space will look like and I can’t wait to get to work. Hopefully, once I start working on the shiplap and swap out the fixture, I’ll have more clarity on paint colors. Maybe?! Hopefully?!

And speaking of decisions, don’t EVEN get me started on my indecision of what I want to eventually hang over the toilet/next to the mirror. Thank goodness I have plenty of time to ponder while I figure out how the heck to shiplap. Stay tuned, I have a funny feeling that the drama is just getting started.

FAQs

What is the recommended practice lighting layout for a bathroom vanity? ›

Ideally, makeup enthusiasts will use light on either side of the mirror, as above-mirror lighting or overhead lights can sometimes create shadows that make makeup application difficult. The best lighting for makeup is natural light, so take advantage of windows or skylights when designing your vanity space!

How do you layout bathroom lights? ›

Keep it simple. For small bathrooms, one sizable recessed light fixture may be enough to distribute abundant light throughout the space. In large bathrooms, consider a line of lights down the middle of the ceiling, or small recessed lighting fixtures around the perimeter. Create a cohesive style.

What type of vanity lighting is best for makeup? ›

Bulbs with a CRI of 90 or above are ideal for makeup lighting. You can also consider investing in LED-lit mirrors. The best LED lit mirrors for makeup provide a consistent, even light that's ideal for applying makeup.

What is the most flattering light for a bathroom vanity? ›

Choosing the wrong color temperature: For the most flattering and relaxing bathroom environment, opt for warm white light (2000K-3000K). Incorrect placement of vanity lights: Avoid placing lights directly above the mirror, as this can cast unflattering shadows. Opt for side-mounted fixtures when possible.

What are the rules for vanity lighting? ›

Place your sconces or pendant lights between 65 and 70 inches above the floor, or at about eye level. Exactly how far apart they are will depend on the size of your mirror. But a critical design decision is how far to place the fixture from the edge of the mirror.

How many lights should be on a bathroom vanity? ›

For double-sink vanities or those with wider countertops, a multi-light vanity fixture above mirror can be a good solution—choose a configuration of two, three or four lights—and ensure the light is about three-quarters the width of the mirror or no wider than the cabinet, regardless of how the mirrors are installed.

Should vanity lights hang over mirrors? ›

While there are many options when it comes to positioning, lighting should never overhang the mirror. This is a safety hazard and can be dangerous. Make sure that you install your light in such a way that it doesn't hang over the mirror.

Should bathroom vanity lighting face up or down? ›

Most vanity lights can be mounted with lights pointed up or down. Remember to mount the fixture with the lights pointed up for ambient lighting and pointed down for task lighting.

How can I make my vanity lights look better? ›

If you have a long bathroom vanity, you might need more than one light to properly illuminate it. For instance, if you have two sinks, it's best to have lighting for each sink. Sconces on both sides of your mirror will light up your face evenly, and prevent any shadows.

Should vanity light be the same width as mirror? ›

For a single-lamp fixture, choose a light approximately one-third of the width of your mirror. Multi-light fixtures look balanced when they are shorter, as long as or wider than the mirror. Just make sure it's not bigger than the vanity.

How high above the mirror should vanity lights be? ›

There is a standard measurement — although you don't necessarily have to use it if there are other factors that might mean you'd choose a different height. Either way, the standard is to place vanity lights above mirrors at 75 inches to 80 inches from the floor to the center of the light fixture.

Should vanity light be centered over sink? ›

Vanity lights should be hung over the mirror and centered on the plumbing. The centerline of the vanity light should be hung 72” above the floor. For taller ceilings, or taller people, that height can increase to 80” but should never exceed that distance.

How many lights over a 72 inch vanity? ›

4 Bathroom Light

A 4 light fixture is simply a step up from the 3 light fixture. Typically, a four-light vanity fixture will be installed over a vanity sink that ranges from 48 to 72 inches.

What color should bathroom vanity lights be? ›

Bathroom lighting experts often recommend sticking to the warm white light, as shown in the color/temperature breakdown below. (Hint: Try warm white 2700-3000 kelvins (K) for the most flattering bathroom lighting).

What is the proper height for bathroom vanity lights? ›

The standard bath vanity light height is roughly 75 inches to 80 inches from the floor, above the mirror. If your bathroom mirror height is above the recommended vanity lighting height, there's no need to change it.
